A child who is already predisposed to ARFID due to biological or genetic makeup may be triggered by environmental or psychosocial situations, such as a traumatic event. Since there can be disrupted eating patterns among other mental illnesses, co-occurring diagnoses – such as anxiety disorders, developmental disabilities, and autism may exacerbate – may also be present. ARFID is a pattern of eating that is common in individuals with autism and is combined with sensory sensitivity. Researchers have found links between autism and eating disorders, especially in thinking profiles. Both disorder patterns overlap with eating and restriction of food intake and potential for significant weight loss. ARFID is listed in the American Psychiatric Association DSM-V Diagnostic and Statistical Manual as a mental disorder and is defined as: an eating or feeding disturbance (e.g., apparent lack of interest in eating or food; avoidance based on the sensory characteristics of food; concern about aversive consequences of eating) manifested by one or more of the following: ARFID is usually caused by a traumatic or stressful event in the past that’s made you associate food with a threat. As a child you might have choked on food.

I was diagnosed with atypical ARFID and did go through treatment (still technically ongoing). Mine is also not necessarily trauma induced either and i have a lack of interest in food as well (i don’t necessarily recommend, but i smoke weed to induce an appetite from time to time-its legal where i live).

Individuals may be more likely to develop ARFID if they have autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or other intellectual disabilities. Children whose picky eating doesn’t go away after prolonged periods of time, or who have extreme picky eating have a higher risk of developing ARFID.
